But in boats and airplanes, the SOG is not the same as the speed through water (STW) for a boat, or the speed through the air (airspeed) in a plane, because the water and air are themselves moving relative to the ground. GPS can't help with that. Planes get airspeed from pitot tubes, and many boats get STW from paddlewheel devices.
