Nee-Me-Poo

Clearwater River

We are parked at a "sportsmen's access" on the Clearwater River, near Greer, Idaho (map). We've had a lovely view of the swift river out our windows since arriving yesterday afternoon, and the flowing river was the only sound we heard through the night, with the very occasional vehicle whizzing by on US-12. We are more or less following the Nez Perce (Nee-Me-Poo) National Historic Trail, having left the Lewis and Clark trail behind in Lewiston/Clarkston.

We have technically been on the Nez Perce reservation since just a little east of Lewiston, and will remain on it until east of Kooskia. At the very western edge of the reservation on this highway is a casino, and we ended up stopping there for an hour or so yesterday after we took a rock strike to the lower windshield just outside of Lewiston, so I could repair the damage. The casino allowed overnight parking, and even appeared to have a small RV park in the midst of being renovated, but it was unappealing and we really wanted to find a nice spot, such as this one, along the river.

Yesterday's drive along the Snake and Clearwater rivers was spectacularly beautiful, and we are looking forward to more of the same today, as we continue along the Clearwater valley and then climb into Lolo Pass. I expect to get my workout today on this road, as will the big Detroit. Tonight we should be in Montana, somewhere between Lolo Hot Springs and Missoula.

  1. One of our favorite places in the world. We love it out there.

We plan to be at a church just a couple of miles south of Lolo by the 3rd week of July.

  2. Just think, when and if you convert to the boating lifestyle there should be very few rock strikes to worry about.
