Website Wednesday: Sharing Crockpot Tips

On Wednesdays I write about websites that I visit often.

Yes, I know this is my second Website Wednesday post today. I was going to share this site next week: Rocks in My Dryer's "Works for Me Wednesday" (WFMW). But Shannon's weekly list link of household hints and tips has a special theme this week and I didn't want to miss it.

Usually, WFMW is when readers share their favorite household tips, but this week it is working backwards. Shannon has requested that folks ASK for tips about a specific topic. So, I thought I'd join the fun.

My request is for crockpot recipes. I know many RVers use crockpots to slow cook a meal as they drive down the road, usually by putting the pot in the kitchen sink. We've been thinking about getting a crockpot because it seems like an efficient way to make those stews and casseroles that are so appealing as the weather turns cooler. I have absolutely ZERO experience with the darn things, though, and would appreciate your recipes, cookbook suggestions, or just general tips.

So, help me out, chefs. Your suggestions will Work For Me!

  1. Crockpot cooking has become my new thing (I recently blogged about it)! Here's a soup I recently made that was good.
    8 pounds potatoes, peeled and cubed(I used about 5 big potatoes)
    1 small onion, chopped
    2 tablespoons butter
    2 cubes chicken bouillon
    2 tablespoons dried parsley
    6 cups water
    2 cups milk
    1/2 cup all-purpose flour

    Place the potatoes, onion, butter, chicken bouillon cubes, parsley and water into a slow cooker. Set on low and let cook for 6 to 8 hours.
    At least half an hour before serving, stir together the milk and flour until no lumps remain, and mix into the soup. Cook for 30 minutes or until the soup is thickened.

  2. Try the Fix-It and Forget-It cookbooks. There are a bunch of them, but the original one has the best recipes.

    This chili recipe is one of them. It is so yummy!

  3. My kids call it Taco Soup.... I call it "Dump soup" because I dump this and that from pantry - here is a basic recipe though:
    1 (16 oz) can dark red kidney beans
    1 (16 oz) can Pinto beans
    1 (16 oz) can great northern beans
    2 (13.5 oz) cans sweet corn
    1 1/2 lbs ground beef
    1 packet dry taco seasoning
    1 packet dry ranch dressing

    Brown ground beef. Drain fat. Then add taco seasoning packet (according to packet directions including the water). Let meat simmer for 5-10 minutes. Add all ingredients to Crock Pot. Cook on low 7-10 hours. The longer it cooks the better it tastes. Serve with sour cream, cheese, crushed tortilla chips or tortillas on the side.

  4. Mmmm, these all sound so good! There's just something about food that's cooked a long time that feels so autumnal.

  5. My favorite one is really easy:
    2 chicken breasts
    1 can cream of mushroom soup (as a variation, I've tried other kinds of soups too. So far, our favorite has been cream of celery)
    1 Tbls tarragon or thyme (not both)

    Place chicken in crockpot. Mix soup and herb, pour over chicken. Cook on LOW for 5 hours, or HIGH for 2 hours. Serve and enjoy!

    I agree about the Fix-It and Forget-It cookbooks. I've gotten some great recipes out of there.

  7. go on over to and check out there crockpot menu. there is usually one week free and then you can subscribe to the menu mailer. I love the menu mailer. And if you print them off then you can compile your own cookbook and continue to go back to it. They are simple to put together meals and they are really good. check it out.

  9. Just did this one yesterday for the first time and it was FABULOUS, ifIdosaysomyself.

    Pork tenderloin

    2-3 lb. boneless pork tenderloin
    1-2 cloves garlic
    2 tbs. olive oil

    Pierce holes about every 2-3 inches all over pork and insert slivers of garlic. Brown pork loin in frying pan with olive oil. (About 10 min. all around.) Put in crock pot and cover about half way with water. (You can also pour oil drippings from frying pan in.) Cook on HIGH for 1 hour then turn down to LOW for 6 hours.

    The drippings will make the BEST gravy without adding a single thing but Wondra to thicken it.

    Make some mashed potatoes and green beans with butter and you're in business.

    My family wants to know when I'm making this again. They NEVER say that about anything!
